Are You Deciding To Be A Success Or Not?

I was exhausted.

I had worked non stop talking to clients all day and still had an article to write AND a networking event that night to go to. I was also nursing a cold.

At that moment I understood that I was standing at the precipice of a decision. An even bigger ‘AHA’ came to me as I followed that train of thought.

We’re the results of our series of decisions throughout our lives but especially in our businesses.

 You Are What You Choose

So did I push myself to pour myself into a dress and heels and hit the event that night even though I felt like death warmed over? I decided it’s too easy to stay stuck in the house, behind the phone and behind my computer. I decided I actually get clients out of meeting new people.(and so do you!)

How Are Your Choices Adding Up?

My hero Dr.Wayne Dyer has a barometer by which I measure all things. He says if you look at the state of your life right now, it’s a mirror for what’s going on inside you.

So if you’re sick and in despair or can’t get any clients, what’s happening inside you? Remember, the sequence of events in your little body are: thought, feeling, action. Not the other way around.

Lump It Or Like It

If you don’t like the results of the decisions you’ve been making lately, how do you change? Do you accept that that’s the way the cookie crumbles or make a DECISION to change?

Proof Is In The Pudding

Another hero of mine, Anthony Robbins says that the only indication of a decision is an action step that you take. Otherwise (and I vehemently agree with him) you’re just talking to yourself and fooling yourself. When you consistently make the decisions to be successful, you will BE successful.

If you want to change your results, change your thoughts and most importantly AND  change your decision.

Are you guilty of oversharing?

Too much

Too much (Photo credit: anyone’s ghost)

Last night I listened to a speaker who was highly touted by the host as being so phenomenal as to be back by popular demand from thousands of miles away. Her topic was the same as mine, helping small businesses grow through branding so I was truly looking forward to her perspective.

Gory Story

After listening to the speaker cataloging 14 deaths (some in gruesome detail) over 2 years in her family, the buffet dinner wasn’t sitting too well in my stomach. Neither was the speaker.  I couldn’t understand how  hearing her going on and on about the various horrible things in her life would help my business.

Down in the dumps

Don’t get me wrong, I teach my clients to tell a deeply moving and personal Phoenix rising story of how they were down and out but learned (and now teach to others) the skills needed to survive and to thrive. The key difference between what I do and what I witnessed last night was context. If the deeply moving oversharing has little or no bearing on why I’m listening to you in the first place, then that’s oversharing my friend.

Make it relevant

For example, I tell the story of how I had a miscarriage on stage during a talk due to self neglect and overwork as an opener to my Breakout of Burnout keynote. The point I make is that I learned the things I’m going to be teaching that night to avoid the same type of burnout from happening to the audience.

Just stop it

So stop playing on the heartstrings of softies and stop exasperating jaded souls like me and tell me a story that relates to how you can help with my pain instead. If I understand that you get me and because of your story, now trust and belive that you can help me, then you’ve got me, I’m yours.

Don’t waste people’s time or attention. There’s little enough of it to go around–use it to help them by telling them the story of why you can help them.

Business Burnout

MS Polarfront weather ship IMO Number: 7608708...

When you’re the only crew on your ship, it’s tough to take our hands off the rudder. So you keep saying to yourself…

But many business owners don’t allow themselves the luxury of a day off here and there, and certainly not a vacation. This can lead to Business Burnout, and that’s not pretty. Business Burnout will make you far less effective, more moody, less decisive and possibly depressed, anxious and resentful. Who wants to do business with someone like that?

It’s too difficult to get away.

It’s not worth it, because I just come back to a mess.

I might miss an important opportunity if I take time off.

Who will take care of the clients?

No one else can do what I do.

I can’t afford to take time off.

It’s no fun to take time off if I can’t afford to do anything different.

via Business Burnout.

The road to burnout for entrepreneurs is well documented. In fact I’m doing a webinar about it in 2 days, come and take steps to focus your life and skip the burnout.

In the meantime, enjoy the reasons why you became self-employed instead. Commit to someone else that you will take that time off no matter what. Remind yourself of the consequences of burnout.
